Jane Gerster
Jane Gerster (2018) is a health reporter for the Winnipeg Free Press in Manitoba. Her reporting has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Vice, the Toronto Star, Daily Xtra, and other outlets. She is the author of “Ashton’s Second Act,” an e-book available on iTunes.
Jane holds an MFA in narrative nonfiction writing from Goucher College in Baltimore and a Bachelor of Journalism from Carleton University in Ottawa. She won the Goff Penny award as one of Canada’s best young journalists in 2016.
While a Logan Nonfiction fellow, Jane will work on an investigative piece about the Royal Canadian Mounted Police-arguably the world’s most famous police force. Jane’s work will explore the RCMP’s paramilitary roots and its most controversial moments as she traces the force’s evolution from its nineteenth-century origins to the present day. She does so with a dual objective: to survey the multitude of human rights violations that have dogged the Mounties since their inception and to explore why these events never seem to tarnish the image of Canada’s beloved Mounties.
