Ricardo Nuila

Ricardo Nuila (2019) is a writer, teacher and a practicing doctor. He is an associate professor of medicine, medical ethics and health policy at Baylor College of Medicine, in Houston, Texas, where he teaches internal medicine and medical humanities. As an attending physician at Ben Taub Hospital, Houston’s largest safety-net facility, Ricardo has focused his clinical practice on the care of the uninsured and underserved for more than twelve years.

His articles on health disparities have appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The New York Times and Texas Monthly. Ricardo is also a fiction writer whose works have appeared in Best American Short Stories, McSweeney’s, Guernica and The New England Review, who awarded him its inaugural Emerging Writer Award. He has earned fellowships at the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo and the Dobie Paisano Ranch.

While at the Carey Institute for Global Good, Ricardo will work on his first book, “The People’s Hospital: Stories and Lessons From a Safety Net Healthcare System.”
