Norbert Shieh
Norbert Shieh (2020) is a Taiwanese-American filmmaker exploring the subtleties of the everyday. His work spans from experimental films that focus on different ways of perception to delicate observational documentaries and narratives. He holds a bachelor’s degree in visual arts from the University of California, San Diego and received a Master of Fine Arts in film/video from the California Institute of the Arts. His experimental short film “Washes” (2011) premiered at the New York Film Festival and won the Jury’s Citation Award at the Black Maria Film & Video Festival. “Two Miles East” (2019), Norbert’s latest short documentary, is part of a commissioned omnibus celebrating the 20th anniversary of the San Diego Asian Film Festival, and premiered during its opening night. His other films and collaborations as a cinematographer have screened internationally in festivals and venues including Sundance, Ann Arbor and Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival, among others. He has directed commissioned projects for KCET, The Autry Museum, European Capital of Culture and Pacific Arts Movement.
He has been a Visual Communications’s Armed With a Camera fellow and is a Creative Capital Film/Video Award recipient. In 2019, Filmmaker Magazine named Norbert one of the “25 New Faces of Independent Film.”
While a Logan Nonfiction Program fellow, Norbert will work on his documentary, “Preserves,” which investigates the process of making and preserving the Taiwanese ingredient suan cai as a way to explore the relationship between food, place and memory.
