Mónica Almeida Chávez
Mónica Almeida Chávez (2020) has more than 30 years of reporting experience working in Ecuador and France, writing about many sensitive issues in politics and economics. She is a member of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). For almost 21 years, she was the Quito bureau chief of El Universo, the main Ecuadorian newspaper, where she led a team of 20 people and was responsible for all the content generated in Ecuador’s capital; she has been the chief of the Investigative Unit since 2018. She is a recipient of a Nieman Foundation for Journalism fellowship at Harvard University (2009) and at the Fondation Journalistes en Europe (Paris, 1993). In 2102, she received an honorary citation from the Maria Moors Cabot Prizes.
As a Logan fellow, Mónica will be working with Ana Karina López-Ramon on a book that examines the political climate of Ecuador under the rulings of Rafael Correa.
