Marya Hornbacher

Marya Hornbacher (2018) is an award-winning journalist and best-selling author of five previous books, including “Madness,” a New York Times best-seller; “Wasted,” which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize; and “The Center of Winter,” a New York Times Editor’s Choice.

The recipient of a host of awards and fellowships for her writing and research, her work has been published in eighteen languages. Marya’s writing across genres appears regularly in literary and journalistic publications around the world, including Vogue, CNN.com, The Boston Globe, The New York Times, Smithsonian Magazine, Agni, Gulf Coast, Crazyhorse and more. She teaches in the MFA program at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Marya will complete her sixth book at the Carey Institute. “We’ve Been Healing All Along: Stories from the Road to Mental Health” chronicles Marya’s five-year journey to investigate the state of mental health in America, representing a major departure from existing long-form nonfiction on mental health. Neither memoir nor polemic, “We’ve Been Healing” weaves scientific and social reporting with nuanced portraits of people living with mental health diagnoses, exploring the enormous impact of mental illness on American life. The book will be published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
