Marcela Turati
Marcela Turati (2019)is a Mexican freelance investigative journalist covering the Mexican drug war. Author of the book “Cross Fire: Victims Trapped in the War on Drugs” (2010, Random) and coordinator of several collective journalistic projects about memory, victims and violence, she is co-founder of the network “Periodistas de a Pie” (Grassroots journalists), which was dedicated to the training of journalists living on risky conditions and to organizing efforts to promote freedom of expression. She is also a founding member of “Quinto Elemento Lab,” an organization dedicated to support investigative journalists; she is dedicated to the investigations about people’s forced disappearance and mass graves.
She is the recipient of the 2013 Louis M. Lyons Award for Conscience and Integrity in Journalism, 2013 Excellence Journalism Award by García Marquez’ foundation and 2019 Maria Moors Cabot Award, among others awards for her investigations and her work organizing journalists against the censorship. She was the leader of the collective project investigation about these massacres and the Centro American victims who were killed, published in the website named Masde72. She organizes trainings for journalists about how to approach victims, how to work in risky environments and promoting the psycho-emotional self-care and networking for protection.
While at the Carey Institute for Global Good, Marcela will work on her book about the impunity in Mexico.
