Anton Harber
Anton Harber (2019) is the co-founder and editor for the anti-apartheid newspaper The Weekly Mail (now the Mail & Guardian). Most recently, he was editor-in-chief of the country’s leading TV news channel, eNCA, and has written for a range of local and international publications, including The Guardian and Newsweek. His most recent books were “Diepsloot,” a deep dive into an informal settlement on the outskirts of Johannesburg, and the anthology he edited, “Southern African Muckrakers: 300 years of Investigative Reporting Which Shaped the Region.” Anton is currently Caxton Professor of Journalism at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, chair of the fact-checking organization Africa Check and board member of the Global Investigative Journalism Network and the Freedom of Expression Institute.
As a Logan Nonfiction fellow, Anton will be working on his book about the role the South African news media played in the period of state capture under President Jacob Zuma.
