NeXt Doc 2017: The Week in Pictures

Picture1-1

The Carey Institute and Youth FX welcomed 15 emerging documentary filmmakers on Sunday June 4th for NeXt Doc 2017, a weeklong intensive dive into the world of documentary filmmaking.

Sabaah Folayan presented her film “Whose Streets?” a film that chronicles the experiences of activists in Ferguson, Missouri following the killing of Michael Brown, Jr.
After two days of rain and hard work indoors, the Next Doc crew got outside for a refreshing hike through the Huyck Preserve.

Send off interview with Sabaah Folayan after discussing the challenges and rewards of making a documentary for the first time, with no formal film training.

Samuel Pollard presented a Master Class on editing while sharing knowledge and wisdom gained from his long career as a filmmaker and editor, followed by a screening of his newest film, “ACORN and the Firestorm.”
Cecilia Alderondo, filmmaker and Assistant Professor of Film at Skidmore College, closed the Master Class series with a screening of her film, “Memories of a Penitent Heart,” a personal documentary about her family. She talked to NeXt Doc Fellows about her experience as both a first-time filmmaker and of telling one’s own story through film.
Until next year! #NeXtDoc2017
