Dear All,

Is that the faintest hint of spring in the air?

Welcome to our first update for 2018. As ever, it’s been a busy start to the new year.

We are preparing to welcome the latest class of our Logan Nonfiction Program fellows to the Carey Institute. Our latest alumni include an Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker, a member of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists’ Pulitzer Prize winning Data and Research Unit and a multi-award winning Wall Street Journal news editor’s account of his predecessors overcoming racial violence and adversity through entrepreneurship and education. The Logan Nonfiction Program continues to incubate the very best of longform nonfiction reporting and our ever-expanding library will soon be supplemented with Matt Young’s “Eat the Apple” and Rania Abouzeid’s “No Turning Back: Life, Loss and Hope in Wartime Syria”.

Next month, we’ll be convening a symposium focusing on the issue of journalists working under pressure and in situations of duress. Drawing upon the experiences of many of our previous alumni we’ll be assessing what resources exist for journalists working in the most arduous environments and what further support they require before, during and after their assignments.

The Center for Learning in Practice has had a busy start to 2018. Dr. Woolis is currently in Jordan evaluating blending learning approaches for refugee students in both Europe and the Middle East, and the center hosted its first webinar on the design and delivery of education for refugees, as well as a series of core courses presented by several of our talented array of world class education and learning advisers. The overwhelming demand for, and positive feedback from, these courses is an indication of how vital and necessary this work is.

Finally, we are pleased to announce the latest addition to the Carey team. Jamie Caligure joins as our new head brewer at the Helderberg Brewery. I’m looking forward to Jamie’s first batch of seasonal ales – just in time for spring!

Cheers!
Gareth
